My people believe bacon fat and butter are spices, so I assumed the box full of plant-based jerky that arrived at 1964 headquarters had the wrong name on it. I am not their target market. Or am I?
I thought it was going to be one of those gluten-free cake situations, where everyone at the table lies to each other about it being “just as good”, even though we all know we’re eating a flavourless sponge. Had I not run out of snacks at home, I might have never tried Off-Piste. My first thought, which has now been echoed by skiers, fishers, climbers, artists and even hunters: “not bad!”
This is not your friend’s yurt-made veggie jerky. (I believe a yurt is the hippie version of a single wide trailer, change my mind.) First, and most importantly, it tastes good ̶ not just good for veggie jerky, actually good. Original Flavour is solid, but Sweet & Hot is my personal favourite. Plus, this stuff is dense-as, packing real calories to fuel serious adventures; yet, unlike with traditional meat jerky, a six pack of dental floss is not required.
And it’s not just jerky. We might all be tempted to roll our eyes at the idea of veggie-based Smokey Bacon toppers and Crackling, and we would all be wrong, very wrong. Sprinkle either on top of any backpacker meal, and your dinner just gained an extra star.
After several bags of each, I’m upgrading my initial review from “not bad” to “shockingly good”. Get yours at offpisteprovisions.com.
