Fiordland Moose discovered!!

April 1, 2023: Zack Black, 1964’s Photographer in the Field, has incontrovertible proof that the Fiordland moose exists! After living deep in the Fiordland bush for five months, Zack has finally photographed the elusive moose.

Zack believes it’s a small herd, perhaps 10 or fewer animals, who have been hidden by a unique geographical feature. The moose in the photo was isolated between two almost vertical cliffs, with a network of small swamps and a flat plain between them. Zack believes the area is perfectly suited to hide and sustain the tiny herd. The cliffs make it almost impossible for the moose to leave, but the next question is: How did they get there?

Zack will be staying in the field for an additional month to continue to gather data and evidence about the moose. He will present his findings to the Department of Conservation upon his return.

Zack Black, 1964‘s photographer in the field, continues his pursuit of the Fiordland Moose. A large track sent Zack deeper in the bush, reinstalling all of his trail cams. Along with a picture of a red deer hind, a possum and a kea, one camera captured this close-up photo of what Zack believes is the infamous Fiordland Moose.

Although promising, Zack believes it is still inconclusive, and has pledged to stay as long as it takes to photograph a moose (unless winter comes first :).

Zack Black, 1964‘s photographer in the field, continues his quest to find the elusive Fiordland Moose. After three months in the bush, Zack was starting to lose hope, rightfully so. And then last week he discovered this enormous track. It’s far from conclusive, it could just be an enormous red stag, but the size and curvature of the track has Zack optimistic to stay in the field until June.

Congratulations to Zack Black for being selected as the first 1964 Photographer in the Field. Zack will be departing civilisation for seven months in an attempt to verify the existence of the elusive Fiordland moose. Building on existing research and with extensive backcountry experience, Zack is ideally qualified for the mission. We will update you on his progress, and wish him luck.
