Book review: Fine Line – Twelve Environmental Sculptures Encircle the Earth

By Martin Hill & Philippa Jones (Bateman Books)

Fine Line is a global environmental art / science project, which draws a symbolic fine line around the earth and connects 12 ephemeral sculptures. Each work was created in situ using the natural materials available at each site, such as snow, as featured in the cover photograph of the sculpture that was erected on Mt Ngāuruhoe.

The culmination of a 25-year commitment, Fine Line showcases these sculptures and how they were created in some of the world’s most remote, elevated locations. It’s also a record. The artworks are all gone. All that remains is these images. This book describes the journeys of artists Martin Hill and Philippa Jones to create their work. The dramatic photographs capture each sculpture at the moment of creation as well as their point on the “fine line”. Fine Line is a very cool artistic achievement. As well as checking out the book, look out for the project as covered in the BBC4 series ‘Nature and Us: A History through Art.’ – NW
