We are in the throes of myriad crises right now, from the cost of living to the climate emergency to the BTS hiatus. These are all important issues. But also, did you know there is a new roast shop in Invercargill!?!
For those of you unfamiliar with the genre, a roast shop is a primarily takeaway endeavour that sells roasted things like beef, chicken, lamb and pork, and these roasted things come with roast-adjacent trappings like horseradish, mint or apple sauce and gravy, and everything is super-sized, and everything is cheap. Roast shops smell like 1953, in a good way.
So when I detected the sweet scent of crackling while wandering down Invercargill’s Tay Street, I did not hesitate to follow my nose. I proffered my $9.50, and I was rewarded: Roast beef cooked long and slow to near-dissolving; bread roll soft enough to absorb a touch of sweet meat juice, but not too much; a sprinkling of warm vegetables to keep the scurvy at bay.
